The Poet’s Garden – Van Gogh – 1888
This painting titled The Poet’s Garden by Van Gogh was created during his residency in France, just as he was leaving Arles. The more natural and vibrant environment in the south of France stirred Van Gogh to compose more landscape-focused works, leading him towards Impressionism around the year 1886. In this canvas piece, he presumably portrays a poet’s garden. Poetry held great significance for Vincent and his brother Theo; they often exchanged thoughts in a poetic fashion in their letters. However, this came to be known only after the artist’s demise. It was his sister who found all these postcards and made the decision to disclose them to the public, thereby funneling everyone’s attention towards the hidden talents of the Dutch painter.
