Description
The Drinkers – Van Gogh – 1890
During his stay at Saint-Paul Hospital, the artist made multiple copies of the works of painters he admired, including The Drinkers by Van Gogh. This process allowed him to diverge from creating original pieces. For this canvas, the Dutch painter drew inspiration from a wood engraving known as The Four Ages of the Drinker by Honoré Daumier. It’s a parody on the four stages of man’s life. The exaggerated facial features capture Daumier’s distinctive humor and communicate his grim message about the atrocities of alcoholism. Experts suggest that the greenish color palette may well be a reference to absinthe, a highly alcoholic beverage.
