The Cypresses – Van Gogh – 1889
Van Gogh’s The Cypresses were created in 1889, shortly after the painter’s arrival to a psychiatric asylum. The subject of this canvas is a Cypress, a slender conifer that is part of the Mediterranean landscape. To Vincent, these trees were beautiful in terms of their lines and proportions, similar to an Egyptian obelisk. He would later say, “It’s the dark spot in a sunlit landscape, but it’s one of the most interesting dark notes.” There are paintings of these majestic trees, this one completed in a vertical format, the tree tops piercing the sky.
