Self-Portrait with Straw Hat – Van Gogh – 1887
The “Self-Portrait with Straw Hat – Van Gogh” is part of a series of 24 paintings that the famous painter created during his time in the French capital from 1886 to 1888. Van Gogh once told his brother that he preferred to paint people’s eyes rather than cathedrals. During his stay, he wanted to perfect his figure painting style. Regrettably, models were scarce, so Van Gogh invested in a high-quality mirror and became his own subject. This painting demonstrates the artist’s spirit, his neo-impressionist technique, and his approach to color theory.
