This sketch, Saintes Maries de la Mer – Van Gogh, was created in 1888 while the artist was residing in Arles. It depicts his journey to the small Mediterranean fishing village of Saintes Maries de la Mer. He paints a scenic view of a thatched rooftop alleyway. This sketch is one of the fifteen that was sent to the Dutch painter’s friend, artist Émile Bernard, who was well informed about his friend’s activities. Through these compelling drawings, Van Gogh captured the essence of his paintings while establishing new layouts.
