In the middle of 1890, just before leaving Saint-Rémy’s asylum, Van Gogh portrayed four luxurious bouquets of flowers; these were the only still life pieces he produced in his one-year stay at the asylum. The bouquets comprise of two Love Flowers and two Iris Flowers, all in contrasting hues and arrangements. In this Rosas – Van Gogh painting, the artist aspired to create a gentle and chic canvas by positioning roses in a vase at the midst of the composition on a bright green background, executed with a subtle brushstroke. Another masterpiece from this series, “Iris”, is accessible on Tableaux du Monde. Both of these belonged to Vincent’s mother.
