Peasant Woman Cooking by a Fireplace – Van Gogh – 1885
This painting, “Peasant Woman Cooking by a Fireplace” by Van Gogh, was created in 1885. It was painted not long after the Dutch artist created the famous Potato Eaters painting. Both of these paintings display dark hues that reminded the artist of green soap or freshly dug up potatoes. Van Gogh took great pleasure in painting peasants without embellishment, thus maintaining their authentic nature. He felt that if a peasant painting smelled of bacon, smoke, or steamed potatoes, that was a good thing. It added authenticity to the canvas, just as a stable painting might smell of manure.
