The rosy-cheeked newborn was the youngest cub of the postman Joseph Roulin and his wife depicted here. This postman was the one who transported Vincent’s paintings from Arles to his brother Théo in Paris. The two men became close friends, and the Dutch painter produced entire portraits of the Roulin family: “the head of the family, his wife, the infant, the young boy, and the 16-year-old son, all quintessentially French figures, despite their Russian allure”. He wrote. He made countless portraits of baby Marcelle, the youngest of the family, with three of the infant alone and two others of her settled comfortably on her mother’s lap as shown here.
