La Mousme – Van Gogh – 1888
On July 29, 1888, upon the completion of his painting “La Mousme – Van Gogh,” he wrote to his younger brother Theo, an art merchant at a gallery in Paris. He questioned, “Do you know what a “mousmé” is? You will once you read Madame Chrysanthème by Loti. I just painted one. It took me a whole week… but I had to save my mental energy to accurately depict the mousmé.” Vincent’s literary inspiration was a renowned book of the period depicting a Frenchman’s relationship with a Japanese woman. His admiration for Japanese culture is evident in the painting. The artist drew inspiration from this relationship for his portrait of a young Provençal girl. The carefully-painted facial features, robust body, and bold complementary colors displaying the young girl are stylistic elements that demonstrate Van Gogh’s affectionate response to his young subject.
