Out of the five variations of Madame Roulin’s portrait, the wife of his postmaster friend in Arles, the canvas presented here is la berceuse by Van Gogh. The painter from the Netherlands complimented Madame Roulin for her keen eye. He began these portraits right before a creative block in Arles towards the end of 1888. Consequently, he finished them at the start of 1889 and named them “La Berceuse,” which translates to “the woman who rocks the cradle.” This theme is emphasized by the string Madame Roulin holds in her hand, connected to an unseen cradle, not depicted in the painting.
