irises – Van Gogh – 1890
In May 1890, before leaving the psychiatric hospital of Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh painted four lush bouquets of flowers, the only still lifes he created during his one-year stay in the asylum: two of the famous purple flower, and two of roses. All of these were executed in contrasting hues and compositions. In this “Irises – Van Gogh” painting, the artist aimed for harmoniousness and gentleness by positioning the purple buds against a backdrop of pale pink. Another work from this series, “Roses” is available on Tableaux du Monde. Both pieces were owned by Vincent’s mother.
