Girl in White – Van Gogh – 1890
Each Post-Impressionist artwork such as this painting “Girl in White – Van Gogh” carries an autobiographical significance. The artist completed this composition merely a month before his tragic suicide. The tormented artist had just left the asylum and wished to find solace in painting anew, all the while living in the constant expectation of another mental breakdown. In letters to his brother, the Dutch painter confessed his inability to depict anything other than endless sadness and loneliness in his works. In “Girl in White”, he chose to represent the state of his troubled mind, expressing his pain and emotions through the guise of a peasant girl. This is one of his most poignant pieces. The tender vulnerability of the young girl, her slim, endless arms with large hands, her lowered clavicles, her vacant stare convey incredible longing. The soft greens of summer spread all around the figure. She stands amid wheat stalks, seemingly abandoned by all.
