Fruit – Van Gogh – 1889
The Fruit – Van Gogh painting was created shortly after Van Gogh’s release from an asylum, where he was recovering from the tumultuous days that followed Paul Gauguin’s visit to Arles. Van Gogh was notably drawn to the shapes and hues of the citrus fruits strategically positioned in a wicker basket, as well as how their round and diverse features contrasted with the dried sticks’ weave. The overall composition was enhanced by the sharp thorns of cypress branches.
In a letter to his brother, Van Gogh referred to a ‘chic feel’ in this depiction, possibly due to the inclusion of blue garden gloves. This painting exhibits Van Gogh’s talent and his application of expressive painting when he portrayed the waxy skin of the various fruit, the texture of the stems, and the content of the gloves.
