This Blue Self-Portrait by Van Gogh is an incredibly ambitious piece, likely completed in a single session without subsequent touch-ups. Here, Van Gogh depicts himself at work, clad in his artist’s smock, with palette and brushes in hand – a look he had already opted for in two prior self-portraits. While the pose and the meticulous introspection in the artist’s gaze are not unique, akin to Rembrandt’s sometimes non-consensus self-portraits, the haunting and obsessive quality of the image is distinct. The dark purple-blue of the smock and the background, the bright orange of his hair and beard, create a stunning contrast with the yellow and green of his face, while accentuating the thinness of his features against a yellowish complexion. The dynamic, almost frenetic brushwork confers an immediate and uncommon expressiveness to his portrait. By its sheer intensity, it contrasts with another self-portrait he painted around the same time, where the artist appears calmer and more composed.
