Baby Roulin – Van Gogh – 1888
This chubby baby was the youngest child of postman Joseph Roulin, who delivered Van Gogh’s paintings from Arles to Paris. The two men became friends, and Van Gogh painted the entire Roulin family: “The man, his wife, the newborn, the young man, and the 16-year-old son, all very French characters, even though they have a Russian air,” he wrote. He produced multiple portraits of baby Marcelle, the youngest one. Three of the infant alone, and two others with her sitting on her mother’s lap. Van Gogh sent the small portrait to Theo. Theo’s wife, Jo, who was pregnant at the time, wrote: “I like to imagine that ours will be as strong, as healthy, and as beautiful as this one, and that one day his uncle will agree to paint his portrait!”
