Auvers – Van Gogh’s Green Wheat Fields, 1890
The Green Wheat Fields, an Auvers – Van Gogh creation, was painted during his final days in Auvers, a small hamlet just north of Paris. Here Van Gogh captured various distinct elements, like the Romanesque church, the city hall, and some unique thatched-roof houses similar to those he painted in the rural settings of Arles and Saint-Rémy. He also painted relatively “pure” landscapes.
This particular piece is indeed surprising. Beyond the field, the pathway, and the sky, no discernible motif is visible. The painting features no peasants or wagons, no rural architectures, only the pure flora buffeted by the wind. Speckled with dashes of yellow flowers, two-thirds of the composition consist of fields in a rich spectrum of greens and blues. Much like in his paintings created in the countryside of Arles and Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh paints a “pure” landscape once again in Auvers.
