Waterloo Bridge, Sunlight Effect – Monet – 1900
After painting this masterpiece of the Waterloo Bridge, Monet expressed, “London would not be a beautiful city. It’s the fog that gives it its magnificent expanse.” The French painter was engrossed in the canvas of Waterloo Bridge, and his other works in the city of London. He would rise early every day to depict the famed metal bridge in the unique colors of sunrise. Later in the day, he would paint another bridge not far from it. This artwork dates back to the year 1900. However, it was likely started a bit earlier and was dated only when Claude Monet felt it to be completely finished. The artist toiled over his compositions of the English capital in his studio, refusing to display them until he was completely satisfied.
