By the Seine, Bennecourt – The Seine – Monet – 1868
In this painting of The Seine – Monet, the French painter’s future companion, Camille Doncieux, is situated on an islet of the river that runs through Paris. She gazes towards the village of Gloton, a small distance from the town of Bennecourt, from which she and the artist have likely rowed. This is the only canvas that survived the brief period that the pair lived in Gloton, a rural retreat recommended to Monet by novelist Émile Zola as easily accessible and affordable from Paris. The pentimenti (visible imprints of pre-existing paintings beneath one or several layers of paint) hint that, in an early phase of the painting, Camille is holding a child, likely the couple’s newborn .
