Description
The Petite Creuse River – Monet’s artwork from 1889
Claude Monet began “The Petite Creuse River” in April 1889. This painting is one of the three he created featuring the Petite Creuse. However, he returned to finish the painting later in the spring, finding that the landscape had drastically changed. The oak tree, for instance, had grown with leaves darkening the scenery he had initially set. Rather than rearrange or restart the painting to reflect the current season, Monet hired workers to defoliate the tree so its former look could be restored.
Monet lived for three months in the secluded valley of Creuse, at the heart of France, starting from March 1889. This was after he spent some days visiting the department with art critic Gustave Geffroy in February. Although he faced health issues and bad weather, he returned to Giverny after having painted 24 canvases. These constituted the first series of meticulously planned and established paintings by the artist.
