Stacks of wheat (Sunset, snow) – Monet – 1991
Substantial stacks Claude Monet depicted in his Stacks of Wheat series, and particularly in this painting, Stacks of Wheat (Snowy Day Effects), stood two to three meters high, just in view of his house. From 1890 to 1891, he dedicated his efforts ceaselessly to this painting series, both in the field, looking out over the wheat field, and in the studio, refining his visual balances. In May 1891, Monet hung fifteen of these paintings side by side in a small room of the Durand-Ruel gallery in Paris, a resounding success both critically and financially. The exhibition highlighted a significant stride forward in the painter’s career, and also left a remarkable imprint on the history of French art in general. In this version, and in nearly all winter views which make up the majority of the series, the stacks appear blanketed in snow amidst the frozen fields.
