Stacks of wheat (end of day, autumn) – Monet – 1891

This creation by the famous French painter, Claude Monet, is titled Stacks of wheat (end of day, autumn). It is part of a series of paintings by the artist that depict astonishing bouquets of wheat in the middle of fields. We present some of them on Tableaux du monde, such as this reproduction and also Stacks of wheat. According to experts, these piles of wheat could reach up to six feet high and were specifically in front of the artist’s home in Giverny. In 1890 and 1891, he embarked on creating about fifteen paintings on this subject, which he chose to display at the Durand-Ruel gallery in Paris. These artworks were instant successes, propelling Monet into a new sphere.

The highlight of these paintings is the boundary between the plain’s horizon, linear to the other end of the world, and monotonic and the stacks of wheat that break this dynamic and captivate the eye. For Monet, the stacks symbolize survival. After all, they constitute a significant edible resource in France during the 18th centuries, especially in freezing weather. According to Monet’s experts, the artist painted these canvases from life, like his impressionist colleagues, but made various improvements in his studio later to harmonize his work.
