Description

Sandvika, Norway – Monet – 1895

The esteemed French painter, Claude Monet, took a trip to Norway in 1895. This journey signified Monet’s quest for creativity, driving him to produce unique paintings such as “Sandvika, Norway” and pushing him out of his comfort zone. Indisputably, this was the most physically taxing journey for Monet. Thanks to his son-in-law, Jacques Hoscedé, Monet was able to explore the Norwegian kingdom with a local’s perspective. For the artist, the snow, abundant in this cross-country skiing nation, was both breathtaking and frustrating. This was because it concealed numerous possible sources of creativity and idiosyncratic subtleties. During his two moon-phase stay in Norway, he created no less than twenty-nine canvases, six of which were painted in the town of Sandvika, as portrayed in this painting. Sandvika is a hamlet located a short distance from Oslo. Notably, art experts speculate that the town’s iron bridge reminded Monet of a Japanese bridge in his hometown, which attracted Monet and led to his multiple creations in the city.
