Port Goulphar – Monet’s “Rocks at Belle-Île” – 1886
The painting, Port Goulphar – Monet, was created on Belle-Île, a modest island off the southern coast of Brittany. Belle-Île was known for her steep and impressive cliffs, rocky formations, and caves. As he often did, the French painter misjudged the weather conditions he would need for travel and capturing the particular charm of the locale, which he expressed as “gloomy,” “frightening,” and “very beautiful”. He remained there for more than two moons. This painting is part of a series representing the frieze of rocky formations, also referred to as Port Goulphar.
