Etretat – Monet: The Departure of the Boats, 1885
This painting depicts the departure of boats at Etretat Etretat – Monet, painted around the same time as another piece we offer on Tableaux du Monde: Boats on the Beach at Etretat. Therefore, both paintings have a harmonious ambiance, both created while the famous French painter observed his surroundings from his hotel window at the Blanquet Hotel. Perhaps on a rainy day in Autumn 1885, the artist found inspiration in the view from his apartment. Once again, Monet masterfully uses his pastels, and his choice of tones perfectly conveys a sense of dampness with a wet floor. In this work, the shoreline is busier: we see boats ready to dock, groups of people, and ships already at sea. In the other piece, Monet also allows himself more artistic liberties, using color shades to symbolize the hulls of the ships and the house on the right side of the canvas, in which he includes green and blue accents.
