Sketch – Monet – 1864
Throughout his life, the French artist used sketchbooks like one would use a notepad, jotting down drawings as one pens down thoughts. One of these is a drawing of Monet completed in 1864 that depicts the cliffs and sea of Sainte-Adresse. 8 of these sketchbooks can be viewed page by page on the internet. We see an artist at work; every sketch is a stage in the unveiling of a masterpiece. Many drawings are upside down, which gives us a sense of the artist with book in hand, flipping it around so the seam is on his left. He doesn’t stress much, creating beautiful sketches isn’t his primary objective. These are working notes for him and only for him. Indeed, these sketchbooks were not made public, representing the secret of his creative process. He also wanted to remember framings. He tried. He set a format distinct from the page’s rectangle by slashing across the notebook with a thin line.
