Charing Cross Bridge, London – Monet – 1901
In 1899, the renowned French painter embarked on a significant project painting a single theme: the River Thames. This iconic river flows through the vibrant city of London and was captured from every angle by Monet in over 100 paintings.
Monet’s painting of Charing Cross Bridge was sketched from the window of the Savoy Hotel. In the backdrop, one can identify the British Parliament chambers lined along the riverbank. Also known as Hungerford Bridge, Charing Cross Bridge is situated between Waterloo Bridge and Westminster Bridge. It was constructed in 1845 with a latticework of steel, offering a distinctly industrial aesthetic. Monet vividly portrays a dark, industrial London polluted by the byproducts of the industrial revolution.
