Caricature of Mario Uchard – Monet – 1857-1860
Claude Monet is, of course, famed as one of the founding fathers of the Impressionist movement. His lily pad paintings are recognizable to all. However, during his teenage years, he began his journey in the art world through caricature portraits. Among these was the Caricature of Mario Uchard by Monet, which came to light later in his life. In Monet’s own words: “At fifteen, I was known throughout Le Havre as a caricaturist. My reputation was such that people from all walks of life would seek me out for caricatures. I was in such high demand, and the pocket money that my mother could spare me was so meager, that I took a bold step, which of course shocked my parents: I started selling my portraits. Like magic, my clientele doubled within a month. If I had continued like that, I’d be a millionaire today. Before long, I was admired in the city, I was ‘someone’.”
