Caricature of Jules Didier – Butterfly Man – Monet 1857-1860
The artist, still young, created this Caricature of Jules Didier, the butterfly man – Monet. He used charcoal pencil and touches of white chalk on paper. The color of the paper gives the work an average tone, with a streak of white chalk added as highlights to the figure of the subject.
Experts agree that Claude Monet initially worked on the individual’s figure with subtle and quick charcoal pencil strokes, then pushed it with darker and thicker traces and obscurities. In contrast to the finished and complex rendering of the face, the rest of the drawing, including the wings, is more crude.
