Boy in the Country – Monet – 1857
The charcoal drawing titled “Boy in the Country – Monet” is vibrant, drawn from a sketchbook kept by the French painter when he was barely an adult. Since none of his artworks from this period have survived, this piece offers an exceptionally rare example of his precocious talent. The subject he chose is a native from his coastal birthplace, Le Havre. The boy’s attire obscures his form, yet the outlines of his apron come across as sharp and determined. It seems the artist exerted considerable pressure on the pencil. In recreating the tufts of grass, it appears he indented the page.
