Apples and Grapes – Monet – 1880
This still life artwork by Claude Monet was likely painted along with others around 1879-1880. It was created with the expectation that it would be more commercially viable than his landscape panoramas. In “Apples and Grapes – Monet”, he employed the subtle use of color, lighting, and texture, much like what can be found in his most impressionistic landscapes. This becomes quite evident in the extensive surface of the fabric depicted. The play of light on the horizontal strokes (signifying the folds of the tablecloth) recalls previous works in which the French painter used similar short horizontal brushstrokes of various colors to indicate the shimmer of sunlit water.
