Description
A field of poppies (Giverny) by Monet – 1890-1891
In July 1890, Monet’s painting of a poppy field and three other similar-sized paintings were crafted. They portrayed poppy fields near his home in Giverny. Although he did not consider them as a series, similar to the 25 wheat stack canvases he began shortly after the same summer, these artworks certainly reflected his growing curiosity for creating multiple canvases concurrently. They also displayed a touch largely more homogeneous than the frankly brushed landscapes of his earlier career with surfaces having a materiality similar to a tapestry.
