Description
The Storm – Hokusai – 1828-1838
This print, titled “The Storm – Hokusai”, showcases two fishing vessels hard at work in an unruly sea. The use of the Prussian blue, happening to be one of the favorite colors of the Japanese artist, is quite prominent. A majority of the area in this print is covered with water, and alternating shades of blue and white are used to depict this background. We also notice two boats, painted in soft pink, sailing on this greatly tumultuous sea. The crew on each boat appears to be humble yet perfectly structured. This print’s scene is set in Choshi, a city located in the northeastern part of the Chiba prefecture. Choshi is well-known for its stormy waters. From times immemorial, the city has been regarded for its fishing port.
