This print of Mount Fuji – Hokusai is the work of one of the greatest and most renowned Japanese woodblock print artists. The art piece is widely known as the iconic composition from the series “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji”. Created between 1830 and 1832, the series comprises forty-six perspectives of Japan’s tallest mountain, contradicting what its title suggests. The artistic expression and the remarkable diversity of viewpoints from which Mount Fuji is seen demonstrate the Japanese artist’s creativity.
Once, this mountain was a volcano. Mount Fuji was revered as a deity. As a colorist, Hokusai had the ability to be both innovative and gentle. A significant part of his success sprang from his wise combination of both an extraordinary drawing and breathtaking colors. In this view, the mountain is depicted with a clear sky over the peak and a storm in the plain below it. The conjunction of the mountain’s graceful slopes and the sharp lightnings in the backdrop yields an image of great austerity, which lends strength to this artwork.
