Description
Cherry – Hokusai – 1829-1839
This painting features a cherry tree by the master artist, Hokusai. It showcases a typical natural spectacle from his homeland, Japan. The print introduces a duo, namely a bird and a flower. More specifically, it centres on a bullfinch and cherry blossoms, the iconic tree of Japan. Indeed, the cherry tree, or sakura, is a widely recognized symbol of Japan. Its flowers remain the national flower, blossoming in light pink and white, and growing freely from the branches. This composition was created in spring, the prime time to observe these flowers, especially on the island of Hokkaido, known for its numerous cherry trees.
While less known than the swallow, the bullfinch is portrayed as a rather stocky, grey and black feathered creature in this work. The Japanese artist used the famous Prussian blue to colour the background, a hue rare in Japan, which contributed to its glory at the time.
