The Great Wave and Beyond
One of the most famous and recognizable artworks in the world, Katsushika Hokusai’s woodblock print “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” is a masterpiece from his iconic series “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.” This series established the popularity of landscape prints, which continues to endure today. Despite his frequent relocations—having lived in 93 different residences—Hokusai produced tens of thousands of sketches, prints, illustrated books, and paintings. He also frequently changed his name to sign his artworks, each change signaling an evolution in artistic style and target audience.
Hokusai’s Artistic Journey
At the age of nineteen, Hokusai began working in the studio of Katsukawa Shunshô (1726-92), a renowned actor print designer. Initially following in his teacher’s footsteps, Hokusai produced prints of popular Kabuki actors. However, his insatiable curiosity for different ways of seeing the world led him to study various artistic styles, including indigenous Rinpa and Kano schools, as well as foreign styles influenced by Dutch imports such as oil paintings, copperplates, telescopes, and optical devices. These influences are evident in Hokusai’s art, but it’s his mastery and integration of these styles that allowed him to develop his own entirely new style. This maturity is particularly evident in his “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” which includes “The Great Wave.” The Art Institute owns three versions of this famous work, one of which retains the pink sky that is blurred in almost all other copies. The museum’s collection includes nearly 600 works by Hokusai.
Hokusai’s Obsession with Mount Fuji
Experts have noted that Hokusai’s obsession with Mount Fuji was linked to his personal quest for immortality—he believed that his artwork would transcend the divine if only he could live long enough. He wrote that at the age of 110, every dot and every stroke would be as if they were alive. Although he lived to be only about 90 years old, his works achieved true immortality through their widespread recognition.
