The Potato Eaters – Van Gogh – 1885
The Potato Eaters by Van Gogh portrays five figures sitting around a square table, consuming potatoes. The subjects of this drawing are realistic and naturalistic as they represent the mundane life of five farmers. Most of them are eating baked potatoes from a tray. While the woman to the left of the painting is pouring a brew into the cups.
Despite the drawing being in black and white, the facial expressions of the inhabitants shine brightly, revealing their inner feelings. Their expressions are very serious and authentic, and they do not appear very happy. Their eyes are represented as fearful. The peasants remain in a depth that is unique to them, not communicating. They have simplistic and striking traits, characteristic features of farmers. Their physiques are bony and coarse. It is evident that Van Gogh is trying to depict the ordinary, poor, and harsh life of peasants.
