One of the most popular and widely accepted legends is centered around the Gotokuji temple in Japan in the 17th century. The story goes that a cat sat in front of this temple with one paw up in the air. A group of samurais, led by Lord Ii Naotaka of Hikone, took shelter under a tree across from the temple to escape the rain, when they noticed the cat beckoning with its raised paw. As Lord Ii and his men moved towards the cat, lightning struck the tree where they stood moments earlier. By saving their lives, the cat became a hero. Upon its death, the cat was buried in the temple and a statue resembling the Maneki Neko was erected in its honor.
