Tree – Hokusai – 1830-1832
Hokusai was 71 years old when he published an ambitious series of prints: “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji,” in reality, a collection of 46. Included in these is “Tree – Hokusai,” a portrayal of a tree set against the backdrop of the mountain. This piece is a synthesis of all the knowledge Hokusai had acquired thus far, incorporating the traditional Japanese technique of print-making, western perspective, and the seeming simplicity of the Rinpa school.
Each of the 46 prints provides a different perspective of Mount Fuji. In this one, the viewpoint is from the plains. This series is a true masterpiece. However, at this time, Japan was shut off from the world, trading only with a few neighboring nations and the Dutch East India Company. Hokusai went on to offer 100 new views of Mount Fuji at the age of 74 and died in 1849, five years before Japan reopened its borders. Some of his works still managed to reach the west during his lifetime, thanks to Dutch merchants. Included among these was a volume of Manga, documented to have arrived in France as early as 1843. Manga was one of the first windows for the West into Japanese culture, featuring numerous drawings depicting it.
