This print of a Samurai by Hokusai, one of the most famous Japanese artists, features the actor Otani Hiroji III. He is depicted in the role of Kawazu no Saburo in the stage play Myoto-giku Izu no Kisewata. This play was performed at the Ichimura Theater in 1770. Indeed, throughout his life, Hokusai created numerous prints of plays and the actors that left an indelible mark on him. In this particular piece, we can see a samurai in traditional attire, his katanas held aloft – a symbol of Japanese culture.
