Montmartre – Van Gogh – 1887
This painting of Montmartre by Van Gogh dates back to 1887. It was created about a year after the Dutch painter moved to Paris to join his brother, Theo Van Gogh. This painting belongs to a group of panoramas showcasing Montmartre, which is just a short distance from where Vincent and Theo lived. Montmartre was dotted with reminders of its past – abandoned quarries, vegetable gardens, and three windmills, including the Moulin de Blute-Fin. The non-functional windmill remained a tourist attraction, offering impressive panoramic views of Paris from the nearby observation tower.
