Country House in Provence – Van Gogh – 1888
In his works, like this one titled “Country House in Provence”, Van Gogh employed the use of complementary color pairs. The red and green of the plants, interwoven reflections of oranges and blues in the fence, even the pink clouds that animate the turquoise sky, shimmer and seem to almost vibrate against each other. The impressionists used this technique to enhance the brightness of their paintings. Pissarro, who helped introduce Van Gogh to these concepts, remarked, “If I was not aware of how colors behaved from the research of scientists, we would not have been able to continue our study of light with such confidence.”
