Waterloo Bridge, Gray Weather – Monet’s 1900 Masterpiece
Without the fog, Claude Monet once poignantly declared, “London would not be a beautiful city. It is the fog that gives it its magnificent grandeur.” Such were his sentiments while working on his iconic painting, “Waterloo Bridge, Gray Weather – Monet,” and on his stunning series of London cityscapes. He arose at daybreak every day, motivated by the desire to artistically capture the Waterloo Bridge in the colors of the twilight. He shifted his focus to the Charing Cross building when the sun was at its peak. This painting is marked as having been completed in the year 1900, although it was likely begun earlier and simply dated once Monet believed it was finished. He painstakingly labored on all his London works at his Giverny studio, refusing to exhibit them until he was fully satisfied with his creations.
